I said maybe if you loved a woman it wouldn't seem so boring, but Eric said it would be spoiled by thinking this woman too was just an animal like the rest, so if he loved anybody he would never go to bed with her. He'd go to a whore if he had to and keep the woman he loved free of all that dirty business.

It's funny that I came across your blog as I just watched the movie on Sylvia Plath (with gwyneth paltrow portraying plath). I read the Bell Jar two years ago and I really liked it as well.
It says you were in a Burma program...meaning you lived in burma for a bit? My parents are actually from burma. Just thought it was intereting. =)
Havent read anything about the Paltrow movie, must have escaped my Hollywood radar. Worked for an advocacy program of the IID (based In Phil) connected with the international Burmese democratic movement before, but have never lived in Burma. Ive come to know and be good friends with quite a number of Burmese--mostly exiles and political refugees. It is sad that many talented and goodhearted people had to live abroad, away from their home country. I hope your parents' moving to the US was not forced by circumstances at home.

My parents came in the 70s and they didn't have to flee but they mvoed here to make a new life for themselves because they knew they wouldn't get anywhere living in Burma. My relatives in Burma are slowly moving out to America.
